About the QMR (quick machine recovery)

Quick Machine Recovery (QMR) is an exciting new feature in Windows 11, designed to improve system reliability by automatically fixing critical boot issues. Here's a quick overview of its key features and operation:

Key Features:

  • Automatic Detection and Repair: It detects when your system is unable to boot properly and triggers the recovery process without manual intervention.

  • Cloud Remediation: QMR sends diagnostic data to Microsoft and fetches fixes through Windows Update, which helps resolve issues more efficiently.

  • Remote Recovery: IT admins can initiate recovery remotely for devices, making fleet management much easier.

  • Configuration Options: Users have the ability to enable or disable cloud and auto remediation, offering flexibility depending on their needs.

How It Works:

  1. Device Crash: If the system fails to boot repeatedly, it enters the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).

  2. Network Connection: The system connects to the internet to send diagnostics to Microsoft.

  3. Diagnostic Data: Microsoft receives the data and identifies a fix for the issue.

  4. Remediation: The necessary fix is downloaded via Windows Update.

  5. Reboot: After applying the fix, the system reboots, ideally restoring normal functionality.

Availability:

QMR is currently available in Windows Insider Preview builds, specifically version 26120.3653, and is enabled by default for home users.

This feature is a significant step forward in reducing downtime and streamlining system recovery processes, especially for both individual users and enterprise environments.
